Madison's first super fitness center burst on the scene in the fall of 1978 and captured the full attention of southern Wisconsin. Two dozen young men and women with strong fitness credentials, including sports record holders, were trained for two intense weeks under strength coach Paul Ward and became a Tanny family; so much so that we started calling each other Tannys. Danny Tanny married Tracy Tanny in 1980. A state bench press champion and a teen Olympic-style weightlifting champion who were members were inspired to become instructors. The Madison club's reputation attracted the attention of the rival Milwaukee club and UW sports people, including tours by Pat Richter, Jeff Everson, Fred Hatfield, and Bill Kazmaier. |
